Here you go, a brief history on turbans and their path in the fashion world.
History of The Turban
- The first mention of turbans dates back to the end of the fourteenth Century, at the end of the Moorish occupation in Spain.
- of obscure Oriental origin
- It is considered a crime in Mohammedan countries for the unbeliever to wear this type of head dress
- Sir Sayyid Ahmad, Indian born Mohammedan educator and reformer, introduced the cap into India in the late eighteenth, early nineteenth century.
- Turbans were introduced into English fashions in the 1790’s and remained fashionable until the 1820’s. Style inspiration came from England’s increased trade with India for cotton.
- 1940’s The Turban equalized people of all means and social backgrounds. Starting as a simple safety precaution to prevent hair entangling in machinery at the factory or in the farm
- 1960’s- Christian Dior made turban-headwraps, pre-tied with elastic to fit most heads.
- 2007- Prada made an impact by showcasing beautiful turbans on their models for their Spring/Summer 2007 show. The turbans came in a variety of rich colors and fabrics, the most impacting one being in a hot pink silk.
- Today- Turbans can be spotted on the street, usually masquerading as headbands. The “turband” is now it’s own item, having become a staple or heavily-seaked item in most girls’ closets.
